Homocysteine, CVD & Hemodialysis Patients

Drops in Homocysteine levels produced a corresponding drop in epoetin alfa requirements and suggest that the active ingredients in Diatx®Zn is a potential ally in the management of anemia.

114 hemodialysis patients maintained folic acid supplementation or was randomized to 5 mg of folic acid (daily or every other day) or no treatment. Patients were evaluated every 4 months for a mean follow-up of 871 days.
Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that cardiovascular events were less frequent in treated patients with low homocysteine levels (x2= 24.1; p < 0.0001)

Conclusion: This trial found that homocysteine-lowering folate therapy significantly decreases cardiovascular events in dialysis patients.
